 Introduction

Arguably the biggest challenges facing business leaders in 2026 is AI. But what does that actually mean to you? And what can you do about it?

To answer these questions and a lot more, on the latest episode of the Leaders in Strategy Podcast (Season 4 Episode 13) we tackle AI head on, as host Mike Harris is joined by a very special guest - AI & automation entrepreneur, Oli Wood

With a decade of experience in tech and specialising in AI, Oli’s insights will change the way you think about AI, forever!

Here's some of the highlights from the podcast:

Ice Breaker

A mantra that Oli lives his life by is: “One More Day." By focusing on continuing your journey just one day at a time, it makes the process feel more manageable.

This approach allows you to reflect on progress over time without feeling overwhelmed by long-term goals.

Oli's Journey: From Automation to AI

Oli's journey into AI began with a simple BlackBerry experiment at age 16, evolving into a deep understanding of automation and, ultimately, AI.

He now works alongside companies, helping them to use AI to unlock possibilities previously unimaginable.

A Strategic Approach to AI

So, how does AI fit into a business strategy?

Oli emphasises its crucial role in solving complex problems. His approach involves a unique method: a 30-40 minute conversation with AI to strategise before tackling any challenge.

He breaks down problems into simple compartments, ensuring all aspects are considered.

  1. Talking to AI: Think Five-Year-Old

The key to effective AI utilisation lies in clear communication. Oli recommends dictating instructions to AI, providing ample context and constraints.

Imagine you're explaining the problem to a five-year-old – simple, direct, and thorough. The biggest pitfall? Not providing enough information.

Remember to include context, constraints, current data, and your desired output.

  1. Unlock AI's Potential: Ask Questions

Here's a game-changing tip: at the end of your prompts, instruct the AI to ask at least 10 questions. This forces the AI to "think," leading to a more nuanced understanding of the problem and a better response.

Real-World AI Success Stories

Ollie shared compelling examples of AI in action:

  1. Mortgage Client: An AI-powered WhatsApp agent qualifies leads and books sales calls, resulting in an impressive 80% conversion rate. Speed is crucial in the mortgage industry, and AI provides that competitive edge.
  2. Insurance Client: AI converted 2,000 dead leads into appointments, even in languages the speaker didn't understand.

These examples highlight AI's ability to unlock hidden potential and drive significant results.

Do’s and Don'ts

Oli set out his top 5 Do’s and Don'ts when using AI:

  1. Don't use AI for simple calculations. A calculator will suffice.
  2. Don't treat AI like a search engine if a simple Google search will do.
  3. Do provide more context than you think is necessary.
  4. Do use AI to challenge assumptions and brainstorm ideas.
  5. Do embrace a learning mindset and ask AI to teach you.

The Shifting Job Landscape

While some fear job displacement, the reality is more nuanced. AI will undoubtedly replace certain roles, but it will also create new ones, such as AI agent creators, prompt engineers, and AI automation specialists.

Oli emphasises that those who embrace AI and learn to wield its power effectively will be the ones who thrive. Imagine an applicant with 10x the output thanks to AI – they're the ones getting the job.

Trades, however, are expected to remain in high demand, largely unaffected by AI.

Embrace AI or Be Left Behind

Business leaders must embrace AI to stay competitive. Ignoring it, fearing its impact, or worrying about job replacement are not viable strategies.

Incorrect AI implementation can be detrimental, so investing in AI expertise is crucial.

 In summary

  1. AI as a Tool for Enhancement: In the short term, AI won't replace jobs, but individuals who effectively use AI will have a significant advantage in productivity and output. Those who do not embrace AI risk being left behind.
  2. Importance of Context: When interacting with AI, providing extensive context is crucial. The more information and clarity you give, the better the AI can assist you. This includes defining its role, objectives, constraints, and the desired output format.
  3. Learning and Problem-Solving: AI can be a powerful tool for learning and problem-solving. Engaging with AI to break down complex problems into simpler components can lead to better understanding and innovative solutions.
  4. AI in Business Strategy: Business leaders should embrace AI to automate administrative tasks, allowing them to focus on core activities like product delivery and client acquisition. This competitive edge is essential in a rapidly evolving market.

Homework

Oli leaves listeners with the following powerful homework assignment:

  1. Your AI Action Plan
  1. Don't treat AI like a search engine.
  2. List your top 10 daily decisions. Break down the exact steps and use AI to audit your strategy, challenging your assumptions.
  3. Identify underutilised resources/leads. Explore how AI can convert them into new revenue streams.
  1. The 6-Step Prompt Formula

Oli's 6-step formula for writing effective prompts:

  1. Give AI a specific role.
  2. Define the end goal/objective.
  3. Provide all necessary data/context.
  4. Specify constraints (what AI can/can't do).
  5. Define the output format.
  6. For complex problems, dedicate 20-30 minutes to dictating the problem, constraints, and data to AI before executing.

Final Thoughts

AI is not a threat, but a powerful tool. By embracing it strategically, providing clear instructions, and focusing on its unique capabilities, businesses can unlock unprecedented levels of efficiency, innovation, and growth.

The future belongs to those who learn to harness the power of AI.
